About Bungie

Bungie is a AAA video game developer and publisher known for multiplayer first-person shooters, long-running live-service worlds, and proprietary game technology. Founded in Chicago in 1991 by Alex Seropian and Jason Jones, the studio built an early reputation on the Macintosh with Pathways into Darkness, the Marathon trilogy, and the Myth strategy games.

Its work on Halo: Combat Evolved helped launch the original Xbox in 2001, followed by Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo: Reach. After separating from Microsoft in 2007, Bungie developed Destiny as a shared-world shooter franchise and later took full publishing control of the property. Destiny 2 remains central to the studio’s ongoing seasonal content, expansions, community support, and live operations.

Development and publishing

Bungie combines game design, software engineering, cinematic production, publishing, player support, and community engagement. Its specialties include:

  • Multiplayer systems, matchmaking, netcode, and online live operations
  • Science-fiction and fantasy world-building, narrative design, and seasonal content
  • Full-cycle game development, digital distribution, and global publishing
  • Proprietary game-engine development through the Tiger Engine

The studio operates as an independent, multiplatform subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment, which acquired Bungie in 2022. Bungie’s work remains focused on the Destiny universe and on Marathon, a science-fiction extraction shooter that revisits one of its earliest franchises.

Selected legacy

Across more than three decades, Bungie has contributed to influential series including Marathon, Myth, Oni, Halo, and Destiny. Its history spans early Macintosh development, Xbox-era franchise building, independent self-publishing, and continued work on persistent online games and player communities.

Operating model

Bungie adopted a digital-first remote-work policy that allows employees to reside in approved U.S. states. The policy distinguishes remote-work eligibility from a physical studio presence.
