About Bubba's LA

Bubba's LA is an independent creative production studio based in Burbank, California, working across commercial animation, motion design, visual effects and live-action tabletop production. Its work brings together filmed products, animated characters, typography and graphic storytelling for advertising, entertainment and digital platforms. Established commercially in 2011 after earlier beginnings in a Los Angeles apartment, the company previously traded as Bubba's Chop Shop.

The studio supports projects from creative development through final delivery. Its development work includes strategy, concepts, scripts, treatments, storyboards and visual direction. Production capabilities span 2D cel and character animation, 3D modeling and photorealistic visualization, motion graphics, product cinematography and live action. Post-production services include compositing, digital cleanup, color grading, sound design, voiceover recording and audio mixing, with adaptations for broadcast, web, social media and out-of-home displays.

Animation and product storytelling

For Cup Noodles' Dill Pickle flavor campaign, Bubba's combined a cel-shaded animated pickle character with photorealistic 3D product imagery. Its Nike projects with production company Calico, including The Story of Air Max and The Story of Dunk, brought together main titles, graphics and macro cinematography of archival footwear. The studio also produced tabletop and social launch content for Disney's Magic Bake-Off, alongside product campaign graphics for Dexcom and motion visualization for Keurig.

Entertainment and public-facing campaigns

Broadcast and documentary work includes title design and show graphics for PBS and Calico's Roots of Comedy with Jesus Trejo, graphics for Hulu's Game Stopped, and title design for QAnon: The Search for Q. Other projects include Tubi's Big Mood promotional work and The Z-Suite graphics package, plus Rotten Tomatoes' mobile app launch campaign with Superconductor.

Beyond entertainment and consumer products, the studio has created animated communications for public and nonprofit organizations. These include LA Metro's Safetyville safety campaign, SCAG's Connect SoCal 2024, Discovery Cube's educational Composting short, and contributions to UNICEF's Unfairy Tales initiative.

Leadership and operating approach

Production methods

The studio's integrated tabletop stage uses a high-speed motion-control robotic camera system nicknamed “Bubba.” This supports repeatable physical camera moves that can be combined with CGI, typography and graphic animation. Its experimental creative lab retains the “Chop Shop” name.

Recognition and collaboration

  • Bubba's collaborated with agency 180LA and Gilles+Cecilie Studio on UNICEF's Unfairy Tales, including “Mustafa Goes for a Walk.” The campaign earned five Cannes Lions in 2016, including the Grand Prix for Good; these were campaign honors involving the collaborating organizations.
  • The 2017 Internet Advertising Competition recognized Munchkin 2016 DNA Video as Best Consumer Goods Online Video, with Bubba's Chop Shop credited as production company alongside Munchkin's in-house creative team.
