About BlackMill Games
BlackMill Games is a Dutch game development studio focused on historically grounded multiplayer first-person shooters. Founded in 2013, it develops the WW1 Game Series, bringing World War I settings to PC and console audiences through squad-based tactical combat.
The studio’s work centers on authentic military detail and playable historical environments. Its games draw on research into period weapons, uniforms, cartography, and real-world topography, while pairing those elements with multiplayer systems, cross-platform development, telemetry-informed balancing, and ongoing live support.
The WW1 Game Series
BlackMill Games’ releases span several theatres of the First World War:
- Verdun explores fighting on the Western Front.
- Tannenberg moves the series to the Eastern Front.
- Isonzo depicts mountain warfare on the Italian Front.
- Gallipoli expands the series into Middle Eastern and Ottoman-front combat.
The studio also created the early independent music game MokMok.
Development approach
BlackMill Games uses the Unity engine and Firelight Technologies’ FMOD audio tools in its development pipeline. Its capabilities include full-cycle game development, historical asset research and 3D modelling, multiplayer game design, networking, audio implementation, and live-operations support. The team works in a distributed, remote-first model across European time zones.
BlackMill Games became the sole operating developer behind the franchise following a 2022 transaction in which Focus Entertainment acquired M2H’s majority stake in the WW1 Game Series holding entity. Focus Entertainment subsequently rebranded as PULLUP Entertainment, which is the studio’s majority corporate parent. BlackMill Games remains active under the leadership of founder and Creative Director Jos Hoebe.
More about BlackMill Games
Origins and leadership
Founder Jos Hoebe developed the original concept after childhood visits to the Verdun battlefields and early experience in video-game modding. He remains BlackMill Games’ CEO and Creative Director, retaining a 33.33% minority stake following the 2022 ownership transaction.
Franchise history
BlackMill Games partnered with fellow Alkmaar studio M2H in 2013 to commercialize the project that became the WW1 Game Series. M2H later sold its entire majority stake in the franchise holding entity to Focus Entertainment; the report states that M2H has no ongoing ownership or operational role in BlackMill Games.
