About Big Ant Studios

Big Ant Studios is an Australian video game developer specialising in officially licensed sports simulations for consoles and PC. Founded in 2001, the company develops games across cricket, Australian rules football, tennis, rugby league and rugby union. Its work combines sports gameplay systems with digital recreations of players, stadiums and sporting environments.

The studio provides full-cycle development alongside co-development, engineering, character modelling, environment art, motion capture production, porting and optimisation. Its production capabilities include photogrammetry, animation engineering and proprietary sports physics and artificial intelligence systems. These disciplines support the creation of player likenesses, sporting venues and the gameplay mechanics needed to represent different sports.

Sports development and player creation

Big Ant’s sports development spans individual and team competitions, with projects serving professional sporting organisations and the global console and PC gaming market. Its supported sporting relationships encompass cricket, Australian football, tennis and both major rugby codes. Development extends across Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo platforms and PC, with cross-platform engineering and optimisation forming part of its capabilities.

Community creation systems are another recurring part of its approach. The studio develops tools that let players create and share teams, tournaments and venues, extending the ways players can customise their sporting experiences. Its production pipeline combines asset capture, motion capture and detailed stadium modelling with the engineering required for sports simulation.

Company development

The business began under the Bullant Studios name before adopting Big Ant Studios around 2005. Nacon acquired the company in January 2021, adding the Australian developer to its sports games business. Big Ant subsequently expanded its Australian production presence by opening an Adelaide studio in April 2023 alongside its Melbourne headquarters.

The two studios contribute complementary development capabilities across engineering, design, animation, character and environment art, audio and quality assurance. Together, they support the company’s continuing focus on premium sports games for multiple platforms.
