About Barnstorm VFX
Barnstorm VFX is a visual-effects and digital-production studio that creates photorealistic, story-driven work for feature films, episodic television, streaming series, advertising and virtual-production projects. Founded in 2011 by visual effects supervisor Lawson Deming and visual effects producer Cory Jamieson, the company grew from a mobile, embedded freelance model into an international VFX operation.
The studio combines invisible effects work—such as set extensions, digital environments and crowd work—with larger-scale CG imagery. Its capabilities span on-set and post-production VFX supervision, 2D compositing and tracking, 3D modelling and look development, creature FX and rigging, simulations, digital matte painting, previs and postvis, editorial finishing, and specialist second-unit work involving miniatures, aerial photography and stunts.
Production approach
Barnstorm supports demanding productions with a hybrid cloud pipeline built around Blender, Maya, Houdini, Nuke, AWS EC2 and Thinkbox Deadline. This approach is designed to scale rendering and simulation capacity while supporting artists across multiple production centres.
Selected work
Its screen credits include:
- Spider-Noir
- Ted Lasso
- Deadpool & Wolverine
- Captain America: Brave New World
- The Fantastic Four: First Steps
- One Piece
- Avatar: The Last Airbender
- The Last of Us
- The Witcher
- The Boys
- Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Barnstorm's work on Ted Lasso included stadium-crowd synthesis and set extensions for “Mom City,” while its Spider-Noir contribution encompassed 450 shots and period New York environment work. The studio has received Emmy and Visual Effects Society nomination recognition.
Headquartered in Burbank, California, Barnstorm operates across North America, India and the United Kingdom, with established studios in Vancouver and Montreal and a Hyderabad outpost. Its expanding footprint supports both North American and international productions while retaining a focus on practical production knowledge alongside digital visual effects.
More about Barnstorm VFX
Leadership and origins
- Cory Jamieson is CEO; Lawson Deming is CCO and Executive VFX Supervisor; Bharti Sattar serves as COO/CFO; and Chad Hudson is Global Head of Studio.
- Before formal incorporation, Deming and Jamieson worked as embedded freelance artists moving between productions with mobile workstations. The company name and philosophy reference the agile, itinerant aviators of early aviation history.
Technical production model
Barnstorm uses an elastic cloud-bursting workflow based on AWS Thinkbox Deadline and Amazon EC2 Spot Instances, alongside Houdini, Maya, Nuke and Blender. The studio describes this model as a way to meet heavy computational demand without building equivalent fixed overhead.
Recognition
The company was named #20 in the Los Angeles Business Journal's Best Places to Work recognition referenced in its Burbank headquarters verification.
