About Avalanche Studios Group

Avalanche Studios Group is a Swedish interactive entertainment company focused on AAA open-world games, self-publishing and systemic gameplay. Founded in Stockholm in 2003 by Christofer Sundberg and Linus Blomberg, the company developed a reputation for large-scale action worlds shaped by physics, emergent player interactions and expansive outdoor environments.

The group’s proprietary Apex Engine, originally known as the Avalanche Engine, underpins its approach to rendering broad terrain, weather systems and systemic destruction. Its work spans full-cycle development for PC, PlayStation and Xbox, alongside internal technology development, publishing and live operations.

Games and creative units

Avalanche Studios Group’s catalogue includes the Just Cause series, Mad Max, Rage 2, Renegade Ops and Rumble City. Its outdoor-simulation work includes theHunter, theHunter: Primal, theHunter: Call of the Wild and Call of the Wild: The Angler. Other projects include Generation Zero, Second Extinction, Ravenbound and the co-op heist game Contraband.

In 2020, the company adopted the Avalanche Studios Group name and organized its work across three creative units: Avalanche Studios for AAA external co-development, Expansive Worlds for outdoor simulations, and Systemic Reaction for self-published experimental projects. The group has also collaborated with publishers and development partners including Warner Bros. Interactive, Bethesda Softworks, id Software and Xbox Game Studios.

Current operations

Following an acquisition by Nordisk Film in 2018, Avalanche Studios Group operates as part of Nordisk Games / Nordisk Film, within the Egmont Group. After consolidating its international footprint, the active organization is anchored in Sweden, with its global headquarters in Stockholm and a development branch in Malmö.

Its specialties include open-world development, systemic and emergent gameplay design, ecological hunting and fishing simulations, physics-driven action, procedural destruction, multiplatform AAA production and live-service operations.

More about Avalanche Studios Group

Leadership and corporate structure

Stefanía Guðrún Halldórsdóttir leads Avalanche Studios Group as CEO. The group’s corporate structure includes Avalanche Studios Group AB as its primary corporate entity, Fatalist Development AB as a key operating subsidiary, and Expansive Worlds AB as a division legal entity.

Technology and creative approach

The group developed the Apex Engine—originally the Avalanche Engine—for vast open terrain, weather systems and emergent systemic destruction while maintaining performance. This technology supports its long-running focus on physics-driven sandbox action and outdoor simulation.

Recent consolidation

The group closed its New York and Montreal operations in June 2024. Its Liverpool studio completed closure in November 2025 after a statutory UK collective consultation, leaving the active operating footprint consolidated in Sweden.
