About Aspyr Media, Inc.
Aspyr Media, Inc. is an Austin-founded video game developer, remaster specialist, and multiplatform publisher. Founded in 1996 by Michael Rogers and Ted Staloch, the company began by bringing major Windows PC game franchises to Macintosh players and has since expanded into development, publishing, modernization, and distribution across PC, console, and mobile platforms.
Its work spans classic-game remasters, source and codebase modernization, platform porting, quality assurance, certification, technical support, product management, and commercial publishing. Aspyr supports releases for Windows, macOS, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, iOS, and Android, with experience adapting licensed properties and extending established games to new audiences.
Remasters, ports, and publishing
Aspyr has worked with major industry publishers and rights holders including 2K Games, Activision, Electronic Arts, Lucasfilm Games, and Gearbox Software. Its catalog includes platform releases and publishing work across franchises such as Sid Meier’s Civilization, Call of Duty, Borderlands, SimCity, and Star Wars.
Recent releases highlight the studio’s focus on preserving and updating legacy games for contemporary hardware. Notable credits include:
- Tomb Raider I–III Remastered Starring Lara Croft
- Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered
- Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered
- Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection
- Star Wars: Episode I: Jedi Power Battles
- Star Wars: Bounty Hunter
- Sid Meier’s Civilization VI platform ports
- Borderlands 2 macOS and Linux ports
Aspyr also publishes and supports games beyond its remaster portfolio, including releases such as Layers of Fear, Observer, and InnerSpace. Its Austin team brings together executive leadership, product management, engineering, design, production, marketing, and QA in a centralized studio environment.
Since joining Embracer Group in 2021, Aspyr has continued operating as an active direct subsidiary. In 2022, it acquired Edmonton-based developer Beamdog, which continues to operate independently within Aspyr’s structure.
