About Amazon Lab126
Amazon Lab126 is Amazon’s consumer-hardware research and development subsidiary, focused on designing, engineering and bringing connected devices to market. Founded in 2004, the organization has developed product families spanning digital reading, tablets, streaming, smart-home devices, voice-enabled hardware and domestic robotics.
Operating within Amazon Devices & Services, Lab126 brings together hardware and software engineering disciplines across the product-development cycle. Its supported capabilities include industrial and consumer-electronics design, embedded systems, wireless and RF engineering, acoustics, sensor fusion, computer vision, firmware and operating-system development, hardware-to-cloud integration, rapid prototyping, reliability analysis and regulatory compliance.
Product work
Lab126 is associated with the development and engineering of major Amazon device lines, including:
- Kindle e-readers, beginning with the original Kindle in 2007
- Fire tablets and the Fire TV streaming-device ecosystem
- Echo speakers, smart displays and other Alexa-enabled devices
- Echo Frames, Echo Buds and Echo Loop wearables and hearables
- Amazon Astro household robotics
- The Fire Phone, introduced in 2014
The team began by developing Amazon’s first proprietary hardware product, the Kindle, before expanding into a broader portfolio of entertainment, smart-home, communications and AI-enabled devices. Its work also encompasses device connectivity, cellular and telephony software, and edge-AI deployment for on-device models.
Engineering focus
Lab126’s work combines physical-device engineering with software and cloud-connected experiences. Supported services include PCBA design, stress and environmental testing, materials analysis, firmware development, compliance certification and manufacturing-postponement operations. Its current areas of work include ambient smart-home sensing, modular consumer electronics and on-device generative-AI systems.
As a wholly owned Amazon.com, Inc. subsidiary, Lab126 remains an active hardware-development organization within the Amazon Devices & Services business.
