About Alterstudio Architecture

Alterstudio Architecture is an Austin-based architecture and interior design practice founded in 2002. The independent partnership creates contemporary work across custom residences, academic and student-community facilities, civic and cultural projects, and boutique commercial spaces.

The practice approaches projects through careful response to site, topography, regional climate, daylight, and material assembly. Its work combines architectural design with interior architecture, custom millwork, building-envelope detailing, master planning, space planning, permitting and zoning feasibility, and construction administration. Sustainable and ecologically responsive strategies are integrated with long-term building performance and the lived experience of each space.

Design Focus

  • Custom single-family homes and residential renovations
  • Interior architecture, furnishings, fixtures, equipment, and custom millwork
  • Academic, institutional, cultural, and creative-office environments
  • Adaptive reuse and historic-modern renovations
  • Daylight optimization and environmentally responsive building design

The firm is directed by partners Kevin Alter, Ernesto Cragnolino, FAIA, and Tim Whitehill. Its portfolio includes the West Campus Residence, Texas Hillel – Topfer Center for Jewish Life, Highland Park Residence, Pecan Grove Residence, Falcon Ledge Residence, City Park Residence, Constant Springs Residence, The Colorfield, and its own Design Office at Cambridge Tower.

Alterstudio has received more than 200 design honors, including AIA National Housing Awards, AIA National Institute Honor Awards, and 17 consecutive years of AIA Austin Design Awards. The firm’s Design Office at Cambridge Tower received a 2019 AIA Institute Honor Award for Interior Architecture, reflecting the practice’s interest in adaptive reuse as well as new construction.
