About 9 Story Media Group
9 Story Media Group is a Toronto-founded creator, producer and distributor of children’s and family entertainment. The company develops and produces animated and live-action programming for television and digital platforms, while also managing international distribution, consumer-products licensing and franchise development.
Founded in 2002 by Vince Commisso and Steven Jarosz as 9 Story Entertainment Inc., the business adopted the 9 Story Media Group name in 2014 as its international and multi-platform operations expanded. In 2024, Scholastic Corporation acquired 100% of the company’s economic interest and a minority of its voting rights; 9 Story continues to operate as a standalone Scholastic subsidiary.
Production and development
Its production capabilities span full-pipeline 2D and 3D CGI animation, including storyboarding, visual development, design, Unreal Engine integration, and picture and audio post-production. The group also develops concepts, scripts and formats, and supports child-focused development with formative research and curriculum consulting.
Through Brown Bag Films, its flagship animation division, 9 Story operates 2D and 3D CGI production pipelines. Its US business includes creative affairs, franchise development and co-production management, while 9 Story Brands handles consumer products, retail partnerships and licensing.
Distribution and brands
9 Story Distribution International sells and syndicates programming to broadcasters, streamers and on-demand platforms worldwide. The company’s work reaches children’s television, streaming, broadcast, educational media, and consumer-products markets.
Selected productions associated with the group include Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Wild Kratts, Blue’s Clues & You!, Doc McStuffins, Octonauts, Arthur, Karma’s World, Rosie’s Rules, Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Dee & Friends in Oz, and The Magic School Bus Rides Again.
The group’s expansion has included the acquisition of Brown Bag Films in 2015, New York production company Out of the Blue Enterprises in 2018—subsequently rebranded as 9 Story USA—Bali-based BASE in 2019, and Portfolio Entertainment in 2024.
