About 81monkeys
81monkeys is an independent Canadian game developer creating original intellectual property and selective work-for-hire projects for PC, Mac, consoles, and mobile platforms. Founded in 2012 and based in British Columbia, the studio combines game design, engineering, art, animation, audio, and interactive software development within a compact multidisciplinary team.
Its original projects include World of Anterra, a pixel-art open-world role-playing game in development for PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. The project draws on classic role-playing traditions alongside modern open-world design, with non-linear narrative systems, conversational dialogue mechanics, and a worldbuilding approach that combines handcrafted content with procedural-assisted tools.
Games and interactive work
- World of Anterra — open-world pixel-art RPG in production.
- Sudoku Scramble and Sudoku Scramble: Head to Head — competitive real-time multiplayer puzzle games for iOS and Android.
- The Chore App — a gamified family habit application that combines household tasks with adventure-style progression.
Capabilities
81monkeys provides full-cycle game design and production, co-development and art outsourcing, application-and-game hybrid development, audio design, and composition. Its specialties include retro-inspired RPG development, pixel art and animation, cross-platform engineering, custom dialogue tooling, and competitive puzzle mechanics.
The studio is also developing World of Anterra through a blend of private investment, crowdfunding, and co-development revenue. Its Kickstarter campaign attracted 5,957 backers and raised CA$397,766, supporting the continued development of the studio's flagship original property.
