About 4L Games
4L Games was a Toronto-based indie game development studio established within Guru Studio to explore original interactive entertainment. Operating as a distinct legal entity and brand, the small team brought together artists, designers and software engineers to create atmospheric, multiplatform game experiences.
Its principal release, FRACTER, is an emotive isometric puzzle-adventure in which players manipulate light and shadow through a stark black-and-white labyrinth. The game combines spatial puzzle design, stylized visual art, interactive audio and reflective narrative themes centered on internal struggle, grief and contemplation.
Capabilities
- Game and level design for puzzle-adventure experiences
- 2D and 3D art production, visual development and art direction
- Mobile engineering and optimization for iOS and Android
- Interactive audio and sound-design integration
- Multiplatform adaptation for PC and Nintendo Switch
Developed over an eleven-month production cycle, FRACTER launched on iOS and Android in July 2018. It later reached PC through Steam in September 2019 and Nintendo Switch in October 2020, the latter release published in partnership with The Quantum Astrophysicists Guild.
The title received industry recognition including nominations for the SXSW Gamer's Voice Award, IMGA Best Mobile Game and Game Audio Network Guild Awards. It was also selected as Apple App Store Game of the Day in 127 countries.
4L Games was launched with support from Guru Studio, extending the animation company's storytelling experience into mobile and interactive IP. Following the release of FRACTER's console version, the studio ceased active production; Guru Studio lists the project as completed, and its standalone web domains are no longer maintained.
More about 4L Games
Origins and leadership
4L Games was launched by Frank Falcone, founder, president and executive creative director of Guru Studio, to extend Guru's storytelling work into original interactive entertainment and mobile IP. Sanatan Suryavanshi, then an art director at Guru Studio, served as 4L Games' creative and game director, developing FRACTER's gameplay concepts and visual direction.
The initiative was conceived as a boutique, internally incubated team with greater creative autonomy to explore reflective themes through games.
