About 31st Union
31st Union is a AAA video game development studio founded in 2019 by Take-Two Interactive and 2K under the initial name 2K Silicon Valley. Renamed 31st Union in February 2020, the studio develops original interactive entertainment as part of the 2K publishing organization and Take-Two Interactive.
The studio is building Project Ethos, a free-to-play, third-person roguelike hero shooter for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Announced in October 2024, the project combines roguelike mechanics with hero-shooter design and is being developed in Unreal Engine 5.
Development capabilities
31st Union’s work spans full-cycle AAA game development, with capabilities that include:
- Multiplayer systems architecture, online services, and live operations
- Game design, narrative design, and visual worldbuilding
- Character concept art, 3D asset production, environment art, and animation
- Technical art, shaders, lighting pipelines, and systems engineering
- Development for PC and current-generation console platforms
The team operates through an integrated North American and European development structure. Its San Mateo headquarters serves as the primary development base for leadership, engineering, design, and narrative work, while its Valencia studio contributes across creative and technical disciplines as part of a unified co-development pipeline.
31st Union was created to develop a wholly original AAA property and has emphasized a culture of creative inclusivity, psychological safety, and open collaboration. The studio’s development organization includes experienced talent from across the games industry, supporting work on large-scale multiplayer experiences and live-service infrastructure.
Current focus
With Project Ethos in active development, 31st Union is focused on playtesting, engineering, and building the online and live-service systems required for its multiplayer game. The studio remains active within 2K’s development organization, combining game design, art, technology, and production disciplines across its two development hubs.
