About Volda University College

Located in the fjord-side town of Volda, Norway, Volda University College (VUC) is a public university of applied sciences that hosts the oldest university-level animation program in the Nordic region. The institution is recognized for its integrated approach to creative media, which balances theoretical foundations with intensive practical production.

Educational Approach

The animation curriculum prioritizes fundamental artistic mechanics before digital specialization. During the three-year Bachelor in Animation, students move from foundational principles—including 2D line-tests, animatics, and physical puppet fabrication for stop-motion—to advanced technical exploration. This pedagogical design aims to ensure students develop spatial awareness and mechanical intuition that remains applicable across various animation styles. Production modules involve independent and group-based filmmaking, supported by faculty mentorship throughout the creative pipeline.

Media Convergence and Facilities

Postgraduate study is represented by the two-year Master in Media Practices. This English-taught program emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together students from animation, journalism, documentary filmmaking, and media design to mirror modern, converged media environments.

Academic and production work is supported by the Sivert Aarflot building, a facility dedicated to media education. It features industry-standard resources such as professional sound recording studios, television studios, and dedicated animation workstations. Students also have access to the Læringsverkstaden, a digital makerspace equipped with 3D printers, VR equipment, and rapid-prototyping tools.

Industry Engagement

VUC fosters a strong connection to the professional sphere through the student-led Animation Volda Festival. Established in 2007, the four-day event provides students with hands-on experience in curation and project management while acting as a bridge to Nordic and Baltic animation networks.
