About University of the West of England
The University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) delivers an expansive, industry-integrated education in creative production, bifurcating its artistic and technical disciplines to maximize specialist training. Operating within one of the United Kingdom's most prominent media hubs, the institution leverages the surrounding commercial ecosystem to bridge the gap between academic theory and commercial practice.
Creative Arts at Bower Ashton
The animation and filmmaking degrees are primarily housed at the Bower Ashton site within the City Campus. This campus is uniquely integrated with Bristol’s renowned contemporary art centers. The animation curriculum operates as a practice-based production degree, nurturing diverse specializations spanning traditional 2D, digital 2D, computer-generated (CG) animation, and physical stop-motion. First-year foundational modules focus on visual contexts, storyboarding, and character function, while the curriculum shifts toward collaborative, industry-simulated projects in the second year. The final year is dominated by a major independent research project and studio modules modeled closely on industry production meetings.
Facilities at Bower Ashton include light-controlled stop-motion production stations, CGI studios, and a dedicated Deadline render farm. The site also provides shared access to green screens, dubbing theatres, Foley rooms, and editing suites.
Games Technology at Frenchay
The BSc (Hons) Games Technology degree is situated at the Frenchay Campus under the School of Computing and Creative Technologies. This program is heavily engineered toward the technical architecture of interactive entertainment, focusing on complex problem-solving, advanced C++ programming, game engine architecture, and software design. The Frenchay Campus features a dedicated games studio with bespoke workstations and provides students direct development experience using official Sony PlayStation 5 development kits through the PlayStation First Academic Programme.
Industry Integration
A critical distinguishing factor of UWE Bristol’s creative education is its embedded commercial mentorship. The university maintains official industry partnerships with local production houses, most notably Aardman Animations, as well as Sun and Moon, Rumpus, and Hello Charlie. These relationships influence the curriculum through live briefs, guest lectures, and portfolio pitch panels.
