About University of South Wales
The University of South Wales (USW) functions as a strategic catalyst for the Welsh creative economy, bridging higher education with high-end commercial screen production. Based primarily at the Cardiff Campus in the purpose-built Atrium building, the university houses the Games and Animation Academy of Wales and the Film & TV School Wales. Its pedagogical model prioritizes professional simulation, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and direct industry integration, designed to immerse students in the technical demands of contemporary screen industries.
USW maintains a deep local ecosystem of industry partnerships, acting as a talent incubator for Cardiff’s film and television sector. Through its strategic alliance with Screen Alliance Wales and its role as a founding partner in Media Cymru, students gain direct access to professional productions, including on-set placements at local facilities like Bad Wolf Studios. The university also co-launches specialized initiatives like the Virtual Production Fellowship, which provides training in real-time engine technology and LED volume workflows.
The institution’s physical infrastructure replicates elite studio environments. The Cardiff Campus features a specialized hybrid virtual production suite equipped with Red Komodo X cameras and Vive Mars tracking systems, alongside a traditional green screen facility with a 180-degree infinity curve. Students also have access to a Vicon performance capture studio, Dolby mixing rooms, AVID finishing suites, and fabrication workshops for 3D printing.
Academic programs follow a project-based approach. Undergraduate animation students choose pathways in either 2D and stop-motion or 3D CGI pipelines, while game art candidates utilize the university’s status as an Unreal Engine Authorized Training Center to master real-time rendering. Postgraduate offerings operate as simulated enterprise incubators, such as the MA Games Enterprise, which challenges students to manage proprietary IP and business strategy. Across all disciplines, students are assessed through practical assignments, professional pitches, and industry-standard showreels rather than traditional examinations.
