About University of Portsmouth

The University of Portsmouth is a public institution based on the southern coast of the United Kingdom. Within its Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, the School of Film, Media, and Creative Technologies serves as a central hub for visual effects, animation, game development, and immersive media. The university integrates academic theory with studio-based production environments to prepare students for the global interactive media and entertainment industries.

Pedagogical Approach and Facilities

The curriculum emphasizes technical rigor through the "Connected Degrees" initiative, which enables students to incorporate a full placement year—either at a commercial studio or via freelance practice—into their degree. The university is a SideFX Houdini Certified School and holds professional accreditations from TIGA and JAMES.

The campus hosts the Centre for Creative and Immersive Extended Reality (CCIXR), a specialized facility equipped with volumetric capture, virtual production smart stages, and cinematic tracking equipment. Students also have access to a dedicated Motion Capture Studio, traditional stop-motion rostrum cameras, and Wacom Cintiq laboratories for digital illustration and 2D animation.

Curriculum and Industry Integration

Programs progress from foundational concepts—including drawing and hard-surface modeling—to advanced technical specializations such as creature FX, physics-based simulation, and real-time rendering. Students utilize an industry-standard software stack, moving from core compositing and look development to advanced virtual production workflows. Practical projects, such as the annual University GameJam, facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration, concluding in the CCI Graduate Show where students present their work to industry recruiters.
