About Universidade Lusófona
Universidade Lusófona is the largest private higher education institution in Portugal, operating university centres in the urban cores of Lisbon and Porto. Through its Department of Cinema and Media Arts (DCAM), the university maintains a specialized focus on the creative industries, offering degrees in digital animation, game development, and game art. The pedagogy emphasizes a "learning by doing" approach, integrating theoretical art concepts with practical, studio-based production workflows that mirror industry standards.
Educational Approach and Facilities
Rather than focusing solely on software training, the curriculum treats animation and game design as holistic filmmaking disciplines. Students are encouraged to experiment with narrative and artistic concepts while mastering a broad range of production techniques. This production-centric model is supported by extensive facilities available to students:
- Animation Infrastructure: Dedicated labs for traditional stop-motion techniques (clay, cutouts, sand, oil), as well as 2D digital animation suites equipped with Wacom Cintiq displays.
- 3D and VFX Labs: High-performance workstations for 3D modeling, digital sculpting, compositing, and synthetic image rendering.
- Interactive Media: Specialized development spaces featuring motion capture (MOCAP) studios, VR/AR equipment, and game engine pipelines.
Creative Ecosystem and Professional Integration
Universidade Lusófona coordinates FilmEU, the European University for Film and Media Arts, providing students with opportunities to engage in cross-border collaborative projects and simulated production pipelines with partner institutions across Europe. The academic year concludes with the "Over & Out" showcase—a large-scale public exhibition in Lisbon and Porto where final-year students present their short films, game prototypes, and virtual reality installations to industry professionals and the wider community.
