About UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television

Operating within a leading public research university, the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television (UCLA TFT) serves as an interdisciplinary incubator for creative professionals. Located in Los Angeles, the institution integrates the study of live performance, filmmaking, television, and digital arts into a cohesive pedagogical ecosystem, dissolving traditional boundaries between stage and screen.

The Animation Workshop

At the center of its digital arts education is the celebrated UCLA Animation Workshop, founded in 1948. The program is governed by a foundational "one person, one film" philosophy, which mandates that each student maintains absolute creative and technical sovereignty over their productions. Rather than training students as compartmentalized pipeline technicians, this approach requires candidates to act as the sole architect of their work—from conceptualization and character design to sound and final edit—cultivating auteurs who possess both the vision and the technical literacy to execute projects independently.

The three-year Master of Fine Arts trajectory is scaffolded for technical mastery:

  • Year One: Focuses on traditional fundamentals including pencil-on-paper, stop-motion, cut-out, and sand animation.
  • Year Two: Shifts toward modern digital pipelines, utilizing industry-standard frameworks like Autodesk Maya for 3D modeling, lighting, and rendering.
  • Year Three: Dedicated to thesis authorship, where students synthesize these disciplines into a fully realized film, game, or interactive project.

Emerging Media and Virtual Production

The school is expanding its focus into virtual production and immersive media to reflect the convergence of traditional filmmaking and real-time game engines. Through specialized infrastructure, such as a professional LED volume stage, students learn to blend live-action cinematography with reactive digital environments. Collaborative research initiatives, including the Center for Research in Engineering, Media and Performance (REMAP), utilize game engines to explore the boundaries of augmented reality and interactive theater, preparing graduates for an industry where real-time rendering is increasingly central to production.

Physical instruction is concentrated on the university's North Campus, with Melnitz Hall serving as the primary hub for motion picture and animation studies, and the adjacent Macgowan Hall housing theatrical performance and design disciplines.
