About The Animation Workshop

Situated within a converted military barracks in Viborg, Denmark, The Animation Workshop (TAW) operates as a specialized animation institution under VIA University College. Established in 1988, the school has developed a distinct pedagogical framework by eschewing a permanent teaching faculty. Instead, it utilizes a guest-lecturer model, contracting active industry professionals from major international studios. This approach ensures that technical pipelines and artistic methodologies remain closely aligned with contemporary studio requirements in feature film VFX and game development.

Academic Programs

TAW emphasizes intensive, practice-based learning across three core Bachelor of Arts programs:

  • Character Animation: Focuses on 2D and 3D animation, physicality, acting, and storyboarding.
  • Computer Graphic Arts: Covers 3D pipelines, concept design, modeling, and compositing, with significant milestones like the second-year "Creature Project."
  • Graphic Storytelling: Concentrates on sequential art, scripting, world-building, and layout.

These programs incorporate collaborative, interdisciplinary production cycles, such as the first-year "Short Short Film Project," which simulates real-world production friction and dependencies. The undergraduate experience culminates in a capstone film or game trailer production and a mandatory 10-week professional internship.

Professional Training and Ecosystem

Beyond its undergraduate offerings, TAW operates a professional training division supported by the Creative Europe MEDIA program. The flagship "3D Character Animation" module provides advanced training in body mechanics and quadruped movement, utilizing a hybrid delivery model that allows for both on-site and live online participation.

The Viborg campus functions as a macro-ecosystem. The institution is co-located with the Student House, the Arsenalet creative incubator, and Filmværksted Viborg, an artist residency. This integration creates an environment where students engage with professional studio environments and independent incubation throughout their studies.
