About Technological University Dublin

Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) was established in 2019 following the amalgamation of the Dublin Institute of Technology, Institute of Technology Tallaght, and Institute of Technology Blanchardstown. As Ireland's first technological university, it emphasizes a practice-led educational model that directly connects academic study with practical industry workflows. In creative disciplines, up to 40% of learning occurs in hands-on studio environments focused on iterative production, technical craft, and portfolio development.

Creative Infrastructure Across Dublin

The university distributes specialized media and design facilities across several campuses:

  • Grangegorman (East Quad): The East Quad serves as the creative anchor for the College of Creative and Cultural Industries. Its 17,000-square-meter layout features a 400-seat concert hall, a 50-seat Black Box theatre, dedicated television and recording studios, digital editing suites, and north-lit open-plan art workshops configured with sacrificial plywood and vinyl work surfaces.
  • Tallaght: Hosts media production suites, electronic computing laboratories, and high-specification audio-visual lecture spaces tailored for multimedia production.
  • Blanchardstown: Provides advanced computer laboratories, multimedia suites, and collaborative spaces oriented toward interactive design and user experience.

Undergraduate Pathways and Toolsets

Undergraduate study in screen and digital arts balances foundational media production with technical specialization. In the four-year Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Media Production and Digital Arts based at the Tallaght campus, early coursework covers audio design, location video techniques, screenwriting, and motion graphics. In later years, students focus their portfolios on tracks such as 2D and 3D animation, interactive video, creative coding, and augmented and virtual reality.

Digital media and game design courses train students in industry-standard production software, including Autodesk Maya, Unreal Engine, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Adobe Photoshop.

Professional and Industry Initiatives

Through its Enterprise Academy and partnerships with Screen Ireland and the Cultural and Creative Industries Skillnet, TU Dublin provides specialized pathways for working professionals. The BA (Honours) in Screen Industry Practice offers an accelerated, 18-month hybrid route utilizing Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) for practitioners with substantial industry experience. Delivered through blended online instruction and concentrated in-person blocks, this curriculum addresses animation workflows, narrative techniques, cultural representation, and industry themes like sustainability and inclusion.
