About Sheridan College

Operating under the Faculty of Animation, Arts & Design (FAAD), Sheridan College is a prominent public institution recognized for its established pedagogy in screen-based arts. Since initiating its animation curriculum in 1968, the college has developed an educational model that integrates traditional artistic foundations with procedural and real-time digital workflows.

Academic Programs and Training

The institution offers a progression from undergraduate to specialized postgraduate study. The four-year Honours Bachelor of Animation serves as the flagship program, requiring students to manage projects from initial story pitch through to final post-production. The curriculum mandates proficiency in storyboarding, life drawing, layout, and digital painting to ensure high-fidelity creative output.

To address the convergence of film and interactive sectors, the institution offers:

  • Honours Bachelor of 3D Animation and Emerging Technologies: A focus on real-time graphics and procedural 3D modeling.
  • Postgraduate Ecosystem: Intensive 10-month certificate programs in Computer Animation, Visual Effects, and Digital Creature Animation-Technical Direction. These tracks utilize collaborative, studio-grade pipelines, often mirroring professional production environments by integrating different creative disciplines.
  • Master of Animation, Games, and Immersive Experiences (MAGIE): A terminal degree that includes a mandatory seven-week in-person residency. This includes a research bootcamp at the Screen Industries Research Training Centre (SIRT) at Pinewood Toronto Studios, providing students with direct access to LED volumes, motion capture, and virtual production technologies.

Technical Infrastructure

Sheridan functions as a Houdini Certified School, embedding node-based procedural workflows into its VFX and Creature TD programs. The technical ecosystem is extensive, incorporating tools such as Autodesk Maya, Mudbox, Nuke, ZBrush, Substance 3D Painter, and Toon Boom Harmony. Annual events like the Animation Industry Day serve as a capstone, connecting graduating students with international studio recruiters.
