About School of Literature, Media, and Communication
The School of Literature, Media, and Communication (LMC) at the Georgia Institute of Technology integrates humanistic inquiry, digital design, and computer science. Situated within a public research university in Atlanta, LMC approaches media arts from an interdisciplinary perspective, requiring students to engage with both creative production and computational theory.
Computational Media Threads
At the undergraduate level, the Bachelor of Science in Computational Media (BSCM)—offered jointly with the College of Computing and the School of Music—pairs technical software development with expressive media design. Students shape their education through targeted curricular threads:
- Games: Examines game analysis and technical construction across entertainment and experimental genres, preparing students for game design and interactive programming.
- Interaction Design: Focuses on designing interactive systems and digital platforms, supporting careers in user experience and interface design.
- Film & Media Studies: Explores the history of moving images while developing hands-on digital production and moving-image techniques.
Studio-Based Graduate Research
LMC offers Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in Digital Media built around a studio practice model. Graduate work divides into two core domains: Civic Media, addressing community technologies and cultural systems, and Digital Expression, focusing on experimental interfaces, performance technology, and augmented or virtual reality environments. Through the recurring Project Studio sequence (LMC 6650), master's students spend consecutive terms designing, testing, and refining working interactive artifacts.
Facilities and Practical Production
Creative production and computational research take place across dedicated studio environments on campus:
- LMCFilms: Houses production resources including a green screen studio (Studio A) and a post-production lab equipped with iMac Pro editing workstations.
- CoLab: A drop-in creative studio providing digital design, web development, and editing software alongside physical materials for quick visual prototyping.
- Synaesthetic Media Lab (synlab): Focuses on embodied and tangible interaction technologies that link physical objects to digital media systems.
Practical coursework across these spaces builds portfolios in cinematic storytelling and interactive development. Foundational classes like Constructing the Moving Image (LMC 2730) cover camera composition, temporal sequencing, and emerging immersive media. In applied production tracks, students work with industry tools including Maya, Unity, RenderMan, DaVinci Resolve, and Adobe Creative Cloud.
