About School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong

The School of Creative Media (SCM) at the City University of Hong Kong integrates technical computing with artistic practice. Based in the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre in Kowloon Tong, the school provides an interdisciplinary environment designed to encourage collaboration across media arts, creative coding, and digital design.

Academic Pathways

Undergraduate study is organized across three distinct degree paths tailored to different creative and technical interests:

  • BSc Creative Media: Combines computer science and software engineering with digital art, focusing on computer graphics, algorithmic programming, and artificial intelligence for games.
  • BA Creative Media: Concentrates on media arts and humanities, addressing cinema, photography, critical theory, and socially engaged interactive media.
  • BAS New Media: Synthesizes scientific methodology with contemporary digital arts and design practice.

SCM also partners with Leuphana University of Lüneburg on a Joint Degree Programme in Creative Media and Digital Media, providing exposure to both Asian and European media industries.

At the postgraduate level, the school offers MA, MFA, and PhD degrees. The Master of Fine Arts operates as a two-year, project-driven studio program culminating in a thesis exhibition. Students can pursue general studies in digital fabrication and creative computation or select specialized tracks in Games or Human-Computer Interaction.

Facilities and Practical Work

Curricular projects emphasize context-driven and field-based investigation. Through initiatives such as the Extreme Environments program, interdisciplinary student teams have traveled to remote field locations, including the Solomon Islands, to collect ecological data alongside scientific researchers and translate those findings into interactive installations, playable media, and data visualizations.

Specialized production infrastructure supports student work across disciplines. Facilities include Gallery 360, an immersive stereoscopic visualization environment developed from the AVIE system for spatial cinema and virtual reality projects, as well as dedicated making studios and a Production Equipment Centre. Completed student animations, interactive media, and cinematic projects are presented publicly through the curated SCM Annual graduation showcase.
