About Saxion University of Applied Sciences

Saxion University of Applied Sciences is a major vocational higher education institution in the eastern Netherlands with campuses in Enschede, Deventer, and Apeldoorn. Its creative technology offerings are anchored by the English-taught Bachelor of Science in Creative Media and Game Technologies (CMGT).

Pedagogical Architecture

The CMGT program employs a studio-simulation approach that moves away from traditional lecture-based learning. Instead of fragmented sessions, the curriculum uses a "bootcamp" framework where students dedicate entire days to intensive, single-subject focus in areas such as 3D modeling, programming, or narrative design. This structure is designed to build the stamina required for real-world studio production cycles and prioritize practical output over standard examinations. Students are continuously evaluated through project work and portfolio development.

Curricular Specializations

To prepare students for professional pipelines, the program requires early alignment with one of three primary industry roles:

  • Artist: Focuses on procedural environments, modular assets, character animation, and rigging.
  • Designer: Concentrates on game mechanics, interactive storytelling, and user experience design.
  • Engineer: Specializes in software architecture, algorithms, and advanced graphics programming.

All students develop foundational skills in the Unity engine during their first year, with subsequent pathways introducing Unreal Engine and professional 3D modeling workflows using Autodesk Maya.

Facilities and Applied Projects

The program centers on the Saxion XR Lab, an incubator equipped with virtual and augmented reality hardware, motion capture, and professional audio-visual technology. Students apply these tools in real-world scenarios, such as developing high-fidelity VFX for radar system simulations, creating full-body VR gaming experiences, and building interactive escape rooms for medical training.
