About Savannah College of Art and Design

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is a private, nonprofit university established in 1978. It functions as a comprehensive pipeline for the creative economy, operating with a pedagogical model that integrates professional-grade studio workflows directly into its curriculum. By utilizing an accelerated quarter system, the institution prepares students for the fast-paced delivery schedules typical of major visual effects (VFX) houses and game studios.

Educational Approach and Industry Alignment

SCAD maintains a strategy of erasing the boundaries between academic training and commercial production. Students engage in cross-disciplinary projects that mirror professional studio hierarchies, often under the mentorship of faculty with industry experience. This professional immersion is bolstered by SCADpro, a collaborative research laboratory where students are embedded into teams to solve challenges presented by corporate partners.

VFX and Game Development

The university offers specialized pathways in VFX, animation, and interactive design. The VFX program emphasizes the technical aspects of digital production, requiring students to master programming languages like Python, C++, and MEL to automate pipelines and develop custom tools. Similarly, the Interactive Design and Game Development program balances game art with technical systems design, standardizing on Unreal Engine and Unity.

Production Infrastructure

A key differentiator for the university is its significant investment in physical production facilities:

  • Virtual Production: The Savannah campus features a 5,900-square-foot virtual production facility, "The Stage," anchored by a high-resolution LED volume. This allows students to capture in-camera visual effects (ICVFX) in real-time, matching modern episodic television workflows.
  • The Backlot: The institution operates a sprawling physical backlot designed for practical effects and location lighting, featuring architectural facades that bypass the need for external location permits.
  • Digital Media Labs: With over 800 networked workstations across its digital media centers, students have access to industry-standard software, motion capture systems, and VR development kits.

Global Presence

While Savannah and Atlanta serve as the primary domestic hubs, SCAD maintains a residential study-abroad campus in Lacoste, France. Housed in preserved historical structures, this campus provides an immersive environment for conceptual development, photogrammetry, and traditional media study, allowing students to integrate cultural and architectural context into their digital world-building.
