About Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute
Established in 1995 and elevated to a "Deemed to be University" in 2025, the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI) is a premier national institution for cinematic and digital arts. Located in Kolkata, it operates as an autonomous society dedicated to the rigorous study of film, animation, and electronic media. The institute is an active member of CILECT, ensuring its pedagogical standards align with leading international film schools.
Academic Structure
SRFTI offers a specialized Master of Fine Arts (MFA) curriculum. Students begin with a mandatory one-year bridge program, which provides a foundational understanding of film movements, art history, and visual aesthetics before they proceed into their specific MFA tracks. The institute organizes its programs across two main wings:
- Film Wing: Focuses on core cinematic production, including Animation Cinema, Cinematography, Direction & Screenplay Writing, Film Editing, Producing for Film & Television, and Sound Recording & Design.
- Electronic & Digital Media (EDM) Wing: Offers advanced training in digital content, management, and new media workflows.
Animation and VFX Pedagogy
The Department of Animation Cinema defines animation as a narrative cinematic form. The curriculum emphasizes a balance of theoretical exploration and technical laboratory practice. Students gain proficiency in classical hand-drawn animation, stop-motion, 3D computer-aided techniques, and VFX, while utilizing industry-standard software such as Toon Boom Harmony, Maya, Blender, and the Adobe Creative Cloud suite. The degree culminates in a major project, reflecting the institute’s focus on high-quality production standards.
Campus and Facilities
The main campus spans over 39 acres and functions as a self-contained ecosystem for production. Students have access to professional sound stages, chroma studios, dedicated animation laboratories equipped with graphic tablets, and multiple theatrical screening venues. The institute maintains a residential model, emphasizing immersive collaboration in a studio-like environment.
