About San José State University

Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, San José State University offers a multidisciplinary environment for students pursuing professional careers in animation, visual effects, game design, and film production. The university integrates traditional fine arts foundational training with advanced technological applications to meet the demands of the surrounding entertainment and technology industries.

Animation & Illustration

Administered by the Department of Design, the BFA in Animation & Illustration is a highly impacted program that blends traditional artistic strategies—such as drawing, color theory, and perspective—with digital techniques. Students progress through specialized pipeline disciplines including 3D animation, digital modeling, storyboarding, character design, and visual development. The program maintains professional standards through a mandatory portfolio review. A collaborative culture is fostered by the Shrunkenheadman Club, which provides networking, figure drawing sessions, and mentoring.

Digital Media Art

For students focused on interactive media and games, the Department of Art and Art History offers the Digital Media Art (DMA) program. This multidisciplinary curriculum bridges art and computer science, emphasizing project-oriented learning. Students develop skills in graphics programming, human-computer interface design, physical computing, and game prototyping using industry-standard engines. The program is anchored by the CADRE Media Lab and features culminating public exhibitions of interactive installations and experimental works.

Film and Media Production

The School of Film, Theatre and Dance offers a BA in Radio-Television-Film that prioritizes hands-on production experience. Students utilize state-of-the-art facilities, including Spartan Film Studios, to engage in the full lifecycle of film and television creation, while also gaining broadcasting experience through the university’s FM radio station, KSJS 90.5.
