About Ringling College of Art and Design

Ringling College of Art and Design is a private, highly specialized institution that prepares students for careers in the global digital entertainment industry. Founded in 1931 and located in Sarasota, Florida, the college emphasizes a studio-based pedagogical model that integrates technical workflows with a liberal arts foundation. Students engage in major-specific coursework starting in their first year, simulating professional studio environments throughout their education.

Creative Disciplines and Pipeline Training

The curriculum focuses on mastering full production pipelines. The Computer Animation program, which includes 3D and 2D character animation tracks, mandates that students manage projects from storyboarding and modeling through to final animation and compositing. This intensive process culminates in a senior thesis, where students produce broadcast-ready animated shorts.

Other programs utilize similar immersive methodologies:

  • Game Art: Students develop interactive environments using industry-standard tools including Unreal Engine and ZBrush.
  • Motion Design: This BFA provides a multidisciplinary approach to visual effects, 2D/3D animation, and sound design, with a specialized concentration in procedural simulations.

The college also hosts "FutureProof," an annual on-campus conference that connects students directly with recruiters and industry professionals for workshops and portfolio reviews.

Facilities and Infrastructure

The institution operates the Ringling College Studio Labs, a 36,000-square-foot complex designed to bridge academic training and commercial production. Key facilities include:

  • Soundstages: Equipped for virtual production and large-scale sets, featuring a 52-foot curved Storyvox video wall.
  • Audio Production: A facility featuring a 18-seat Dolby ATMOS dub stage, ADR/Foley stage, and live mix rooms.
  • Post-Production: Nineteen suites equipped with DaVinci Resolve Studio for professional color grading and finishing.

Students have access to extensive on-campus computer labs with hundreds of workstations and render farms capable of handling complex data loads.
