About Rhode Island School of Design

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) approaches media production through a pedagogical framework that fuses traditional analog craftsmanship with advanced computational methodologies. Within its Film/Animation/Video (FAV) and Digital + Media (D+M) programs, the institution treats technical instruction as a vehicle for artistic inquiry rather than an end in itself. RISD resists hyper-specialization, instead cultivating versatile makers who anchor their technical pipelines in conceptual design, socio-cultural awareness, and liberal arts integration.

Undergraduate and Graduate Pathways

Undergraduate students follow a structured progression beginning with the Experimental and Foundation Studies (EFS) year, which provides a grounding in design and spatial dynamics. Sophomore year introduces technical foundations across 16mm film, video, and animation, leading to junior-year specializations in Animation, Live Action, or Open Media. The program culminates in a nine-month Senior Studio, where students produce an independent film or installation, culminating in the public FAV Senior Show.

At the graduate level, the MFA in Digital + Media interrogates technology as a cultural-historical phenomenon. Candidates focus on physical computing, generative AI, and interaction design, often engaging in interdisciplinary research through the Edna W. Lawrence Nature Lab or via cross-registration with Brown University.

Hybrid Production Environment

RISD maintains a commitment to hybrid analog-digital workflows, ensuring students can integrate tactile media with computational production. Facilities include:

  • FAV Production Studios: Equipped for 16mm/35mm cinematography and practical effects.
  • Animation Workspaces: Dedicated to traditional and stop-motion production.
  • The Movement Lab: A specialized space for motion capture, 3D scanning, and spatial computing, utilizing engines like Unreal and Unity.
  • Digital Editing Suites: High-end workstations supporting industry-standard post-production and 3D pipelines.

By requiring students to master foundational mechanics alongside software-driven workflows—often involving critical discourse on representation and bias—RISD graduates are prepared to define and adapt to emerging creative landscapes.
