About Queensland University of Technology

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) delivers creative production education centered at its Kelvin Grove campus in Brisbane, operating through the Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice. The university integrates animation, visual effects, game design, and film production within cross-disciplinary pipelines, emphasizing real-time rendering and virtual production.

Specialist Production Facilities

Practical instruction is anchored in the Creative Industries Precinct, a dedicated complex designed with interconnected studio spaces that support multi-disciplinary production.

  • XR Screen Futures Hub: A 180-square-meter virtual production stage featuring a 10-meter by 6-meter LED volume, a full lighting grid, and a 20-camera optical motion-capture setup.
  • The Scan Cave: A large-scale photogrammetry facility equipped with approximately 90 cameras and robotic camera rigs, configured for generating digital doubles and production-ready 3D assets.

These facilities support specialized coursework in camera and environment tracking, real-time animation, and virtual art department workflows.

Degree Pathways

Creative technology education at QUT is structured around two primary undergraduate frameworks:

  • Bachelor of Creative Arts: Offers dedicated pathways in Animation and Film and Screen. Students study 2D and 3D character animation, motion design, and screen storytelling, utilizing software such as Maya, ZBrush, and Unreal Engine. Intermediate and advanced units explore visual post-production, on-set supervision for visual effects, compositing techniques, and artificial intelligence tools for content generation.
  • Bachelor of Games and Interactive Environments: Provides majors in Animation, Game Design, and Software Technologies. Training focuses on game engine architecture, interactive mechanics, level construction, atmospheric effects, and procedural environment generation in Unreal Engine.

Practical Collaboration

Final-year study centers on team-based, client-driven projects. Through capstone initiatives such as the IT and Games Showcase, student teams collaborate directly with commercial organizations to produce functional interactive applications, games, and screen projects. Industry engagements with organizations such as virtual art department studio Vizion and the BMW Design Academy introduce students to commercial virtual production pipelines and real-time visualization practices.
