About Polish National Film School in Lodz
The Polish National Film School in Lodz operates as a state-funded public arts university known for immersing students in hands-on production from the start of their studies. Rather than separating digital disciplines from classical filmmaking, the school structures its teaching around a master-apprentice model where animation and visual effects are practiced directly in service of cinematic storytelling.
Animation and Film Special Effects
The primary pathway for digital and visual artists is the five-year consolidated Master of Arts in Animation Films and Film Special Effects, situated within the Direction of Photography and Television Production Department. The curriculum combines traditional film craft with digital post-production, requiring students to work across both digital workflows and traditional 35mm film stock using analogue and digital camera systems.
The program is organized around several key production areas:
- Cinematography and Visual Effects: Focusing on lighting physics, camera exposure, lens mechanics, and practical alongside digital effects.
- Animation Modalities: Covering traditional cinematographic animation, such as stop-motion, alongside computer-generated graphics.
- Narrative Film Forms: Writing, directing, and executing short films, commercials, and music videos.
- Post-Production: Instruction in editing, color grading, sound engineering, and foley.
Instruction centers on individual film etudes rather than isolated software exercises. Working under direct faculty supervision, students write, direct, and complete their own projects, building a portfolio through continuous filmmaking.
Studio Infrastructure and Production
Education takes place on an active studio campus located in the historic Księży Młyn quarter of Łódź. The school produces nearly 300 student film projects each year, supported by dedicated facilities including the New Media Centre, television and film stages, photography studios, and an Etude Production Studio. Production logistics are managed through an internal School Film Production Unit, giving students access to specialized lighting stores, camera gear, digital post-production laboratories, and professional technical crew such as camera operators and sound recordists.
For professionals seeking specialized training in studio operations, the Film Art Organization Department also offers a one-year postgraduate program in Digital Film Post-Production Management, focusing on supervising complex post-production pipelines.
Study Requirements and Delivery
All degree programs are conducted entirely in person to utilize on-campus stages and editing suites. Instruction is delivered in Polish. Prospective applicants undergo a competitive, multi-stage entrance exam evaluating drawing ability, visual creativity, and artistic aptitude. International applicants admitted to full-time study must complete a one-year preparatory Polish language course to reach a B2 proficiency level before beginning degree coursework.
