About PIXL VISN media arts academy
Located in the MediaPark in Cologne, Germany, PIXL VISN media arts academy is a private vocational training institution dedicated to 3D animation, visual effects, and game art. Established in 2010 by industry professionals Andrei Stirbu and Robb Innes, the academy bases its educational model on intensive, production-oriented training aimed at developing industry-standard demo reels rather than traditional academic degrees.
Curriculum Structure
The academy delivers core diploma programs in 3D Animation & VFX as well as Game Art & Visual Design across an 18-month full-time schedule, with a 36-month part-time pacing option available. The curriculum is structured across six consecutive quarters:
- Quarter 1 (Foundations): Covers core design theory, concept development, storyboarding, fundamental 3D modeling, and cinematic lighting.
- Quarter 2 (Core Skills): Focuses on advanced modeling and texturing, real-time engines, and assistive AI workflows for tasks such as rotoscoping, tracking, and scene reconstruction.
- Quarter 3 (Specialization): Allows students to select targeted technical pathways, including character modeling, compositing, grooming, or hair and fur simulation.
- Quarter 4 (Team Production): Involves a large-scale collaborative project led by an industry CG supervisor, simulating professional studio pipeline hand-offs and production problem-solving.
- Quarters 5 and 6 (Demo Reel Development and Finalization): Centers on individual student reel execution supported by one-on-one mentorship, career coaching, and final rendering polish.
Facilities and Instruction
Courses are instructed by working industry professionals with experience at major visual effects and animation studios, including ILM, MPC, DNEG, Sony, and Disney. Class sizes are kept small, often capped at 16 students, to support individualized guidance during advanced project phases.
On-campus facilities at the Cologne campus feature dedicated workstations equipped for heavy rendering loads alongside a specialized green screen studio used for filming live-action footage and integrating it with 3D digital environments. Practical software training spans production-standard applications, including Autodesk Maya, ZBrush, Mari, Houdini, Nuke, and Unreal Engine, as well as Arnold, V-Ray, and Redshift.
