About Parsons School of Design
Parsons School of Design, a constituent college of The New School, approaches digital media, game design, and animation through an interdisciplinary lens grounded in art, technology, and social engagement. Based in Greenwich Village in New York City, the school merges studio arts foundations with computational research and critical theory, framing digital tools as vehicles for cultural commentary and social change.
Design and Technology Pathways
The primary hub for interactive media, game art, and emerging technology is the STEM-designated Design and Technology program, offered as both a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA). Undergraduate students begin with a shared first-year foundation covering broad studio practices and liberal arts before choosing between two distinct pathways:
- Game Design: Focuses on interactive storytelling, player experience, and "serious games" that engage with cultural activism, accessibility, and environmental issues. Students collaborate with initiatives like Games for Change and external partners such as Apple, Nickelodeon, MTV, and the Eyebeam Art & Technology Center.
- Creative Technology: Concentrates on creative coding, physical computing, and real-time media. The curriculum teaches code as an expressive medium alongside rapid prototyping, using tools such as Unity, TouchDesigner, RealityKit, and physical computing hardware including Arduino and Raspberry Pi.
Graduate study in the MFA Design and Technology program emphasizes self-directed studio research. Students explore machine learning, spatial computing, and interactive installations, utilizing modern platforms such as Claude and ElevenLabs to examine how emerging technologies shape human interaction.
Making Facilities and International Study
Practical fabrication is anchored by the Making Center, a 70,000-square-foot facility housing comprehensive digital prototyping labs, print shops, and physical fabrication spaces that support cross-disciplinary projects.
Beyond New York, students can study at Parsons Paris, established in the 1st arrondissement, which offers a BFA in Art, Media, and Technology situated within European design culture. Online study is available through programs such as the MS in Strategic Design and Management, as well as a noncredit Motion Design and Animation certificate covering storyboarding, digital editing, and visual effects pipelines.
