About OCAD University

OCAD University approaches animation, game design, and visual effects through an experimental model that bridges traditional fine arts and digital production pipelines. Rather than focusing exclusively on commercial studio software, the university emphasizes a hybrid practice that pairs tangible material fabrication with digital simulation and interactive media.

Academic Programs

The Experimental Animation BFA anchors the university's screen arts offerings, blending physical media with digital workflows. Foundational coursework covers rotoscoping and traditional 2D animation before students branch into tactile methods such as stop-motion puppet fabrication and mouldmaking. These physical techniques connect with digital post-production through coursework in experimental 3D simulations and advanced compositing.

The Digital Futures program operates across undergraduate (BFA/BDes) and graduate (MA/MDes/MFA) levels, functioning as an incubator for game design, virtual reality, augmented reality, and physical computing. Coursework prioritizes rapid prototyping, guiding students from analog concept development to functional interactive builds in engines such as Unity. For continuing education students, the university provides an Animation Skills Certificate focusing on software-specific instruction in tools such as Blender, Adobe After Effects, and Toon Boom Harmony through distance learning.

Facilities and Production Spaces

Production resources at OCAD U reflect its blend of physical craft and digital technology:

  • Integrated Media Facilities: Downshooter suites, stop-motion stages, motion-control camera systems, and a media laboratory equipped with high-performance GPU workstations for rendering complex simulations.
  • Experimental Fabrication Studio: A 4,500-square-foot workshop at the Richmond Street campus equipped with collaborative robotic arms, laser cutters, and 3D printers.
  • Material Studios: Dedicated puppet-making facilities and a mouldmaking studio featuring vacuum pumps, plaster lathes, and flexible rubber casting materials.
  • Specialized Research Labs: Research facilities including the PHASE Lab, which explores intersections of physical and digital environments, and the ACE Lab, which investigates mixed reality and artificial intelligence.

Industry Engagement and Exhibition

Students present their work publicly throughout their studies. Fourth-year Digital Futures cohorts collaborate on capstone game projects frequently debuted at regional showcases such as the Level Up event. Graduating students across all creative disciplines exhibit their portfolios at GradEx, the university's annual public exhibition that connects emerging talent directly with Toronto's film, animation, and technology sectors.
