About Northumbria University
Northumbria University, based in Newcastle upon Tyne, embeds technical media production within computational science and visual narrative theory. Tracing its origins to 1877 as the Rutherford College of Technology before gaining university status in 1992, the institution has structured its creative computing and digital arts programs around practical production pipelines.
Games Computing
Anchored in computer science, Northumbria's games development curriculum focuses on low-level system mechanics alongside interactive production. The Games Computing BSc (Hons) pathway prepares students to manipulate game systems at the code level using C++, alongside practical implementation in Unreal Engine.
The curriculum progresses systematically across four stages:
- Year One: Builds core computational thinking, algorithmic problem-solving, data management, and introductory game mechanics.
- Year Two: Centers on object-oriented programming, software architecture, computer vision, and collaborative client consultancy projects.
- Year Three: Provides an optional industry placement year or study abroad exchange to build professional networks.
- Year Four: Concentrates on 3D graphics programming, console development, advanced game systems, and an independent dissertation.
Animation and Visual Effects
The university's programs in Animation and Motion Graphics and Animation Design are organized around studio-style collaborative workflows. Students begin by studying foundational animation mechanics, historical techniques, and visual screen grammar before moving into three-dimensional digital production.
Training targets broadcast and visual effects pipelines, featuring dedicated modules in digital compositing. Practical coursework covers rotoscoping, green-screen integration, keying, masking, and matte painting. Autodesk Maya serves as the primary application for 3D modeling, texturing, and spatial animation, while Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, and Audition are utilized for post-production, motion design, and sound editing.
Facilities and Professional Showcase
Practical portfolio development culminates in REVEAL, the university's annual degree showcase. The event provides graduating students in animation and digital design the opportunity to screen final films and display interactive projects at regional public venues, including the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and Gallery North.
Technical work is supported by dedicated infrastructure within the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, which houses specialist computing labs, CAD suites, and prototyping workshops designed for compiling game code and rendering complex 3D assets.
