About Noroff
Noroff operates as an educational institution in Norway encompassing both Noroff University College and Noroff Higher Vocational College. This dual setup addresses different educational needs within creative production: the university college awards three-year bachelor's degrees covering narrative development, theory, and technical foundations, while the vocational college delivers intensive diplomas geared toward direct technical practice. Instruction relies heavily on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and simulated studio workflows.
Degree and Vocational Pathways
Creative disciplines are structured to take students from core visual principles through to complex production pipelines:
- Bachelor in Interactive Media - Animation: This three-year program begins with visual culture, storytelling theory, and foundational modules in 3D rigging and animation techniques. Intermediate coursework covers character creation, procedural animation, and post-production, culminating in a final year where students produce an animated short film across every stage from storyboarding to final render.
- Vocational 3D Art and Games Technology: This pathway concentrates on technical asset creation, keyframe character animation, and the integration of lighting, color, and mood into 3D environments. Second-year specializations split into interactive systems and content creation.
- Game Art and Level Design: Practical short courses focus on real-time pipeline management and asset authoring, requiring students to bridge artistic modeling and game engine mechanics.
Real-Time Engines and Production Tech
Noroff distinguishes clearly between pre-rendered cinematic workflows and real-time interactive media. As an academic partner of Epic Games, the school roots its real-time development in Unreal Engine 5 alongside tools such as Autodesk Maya, ZBrush, Substance 3D Painter, Unity, and Nuke. Students learn how real-time engine constraints demand specialized asset optimization compared to traditional film visual effects.
Curricula also incorporate machine learning tools, including generative image models and Large Language Models, within creative pipelines. Rather than replacing technical foundations, these tools are deployed for concept art generation, rapid prototyping, and environment layout, emphasizing creative direction and quality control.
Study Options and Campus Facilities
Programs are offered through three delivery modes: full-time on-campus study, fully remote online learning, and the hybrid "OnlinePLUS" format, which combines remote flexibility with access to physical campus workspaces. Noroff maintains physical campuses in Oslo, Bergen, Kristiansand, and Stavanger equipped with computer labs, communal workspaces, photo studios, and audio recording facilities.
