About National Institute of Design

The National Institute of Design (NID) is an autonomous university and an Institution of National Importance under the Government of India. Established in 1961 following the landmark "India Report" by Charles and Ray Eames, the institute is celebrated for its Bauhaus-inspired pedagogy that emphasizes hands-on craftsmanship and visual literacy as the foundation for modern design.

Educational Approach

NID operates a studio-based curriculum that prioritizes the philosophy of "learning by doing." Rather than focusing solely on digital software, the institute requires students to master fundamental skills—such as anatomy, character design, and manual stop-motion techniques—before engaging with advanced digital production pipelines. This environment blends high-resolution technology with traditional techniques, preparing students for critical roles in creative direction, narrative architecture, and systems design.

Multi-Campus Specialization

NID employs a strategic multi-campus model where each location serves as an incubator for specific design disciplines:

  • Ahmedabad Campus: The main campus focuses on foundational design and classical visual communication. It houses the Animation Film Design Lab, equipped with traditional animation light-boxes, Oxberry cameras for 16mm production, and modern digital workstations.
  • Bengaluru Campus: Positioned within India’s technology hub, this campus specializes in IT-integrated programs including Digital Game Design, Interaction Design, and Information Design. It bridges the gap between artistic storytelling and technical systems thinking.
  • Gandhinagar Campus: This location focuses on New Media Design and Toy and Game Design, supported by extensive fabrication workshops featuring CNC machining, 3D printing, and laser cutting to integrate physical product creation with digital interactivity.

Across these campuses, students engage in live, industry-sponsored projects, ensuring that graduates are prepared to apply their design expertise to complex, real-world challenges.
