About National Film and Television School
Based at Beaconsfield Studios in Buckinghamshire, the National Film and Television School (NFTS) operates as an independent postgraduate institution structured around studio-level film, television, and games production. Rather than functioning as a conventional lecture-based college, the NFTS structures its curriculum around collaborative pipelines where creative roles interact as they would in an active production studio. The school covers the production costs of student graduation projects, allowing students across technical and artistic disciplines to focus on practical execution without self-funding their work.
Visual effects instruction is split into two specialized Master of Arts pathways to mirror commercial studio departments:
- VFX: Environments and Assets (MA): Focuses on procedural worldbuilding, high-end asset creation, physically based simulations for destruction, smoke, and fluids, and integrating physical miniatures with CG environments. Key tools include Houdini, Maya, ZBrush, Substance 3D Painter, Mari, and Unreal Engine.
- VFX: Lighting and Compositing (MA): Centers on image-based lighting, green-screen integration, digital worldbuilding, cinematic shotcraft, and plate matching using Nuke, Nuke Stage, Nuke Studio, Houdini, Unreal Engine, and USD workflows.
In animation and interactive media, the school provides distinct routes for directors, technical artists, and game creators:
- Directing Animation (MFA): A two-year, in-person program exploring 2D drawn animation, 3D CGI, stop-motion, and pixelation. Students direct fully crewed student teams to complete a graduation film.
- Animation for Film and Games (MA): A one-year technical course centered on 3D asset generation, rigging, weight painting, and engine-ready workflows for film and real-time interactive media.
- Games Design and Development (MFA): A two-year program where students take games from concept to release, learning programming, art, and production while presenting finished titles at industry showcases such as EGX and Develop.
Facilities at the Beaconsfield campus include the dedicated Games Design and Development Lab, equipped with 24/7 access to Alienware Aurora workstations powered by NVIDIA RTX GPUs, alongside virtual reality hardware and motion-capture tools. Emerging technology is integrated across production pathways through an LED volume stage established in partnership with WarnerMedia for virtual production, alongside short courses and certificate training addressing generative and ethical AI workflows in post-production.
