About Nanyang Technological University, School of Art, Design and Media
Established in 2005 within Nanyang Technological University's College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, the School of Art, Design and Media (NTU ADM) provides studio-based education combining traditional artistic practices with advanced technical production pipelines.
Educational Pathways
Undergraduate study centers on the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art, Design and Media, organized into distinct creative specializations:
- Animation and Game Art: Covers 2D and 3D mechanics, character animation, visual effects, rigging, lighting pipelines, and game design.
- Cinematic Arts: Emphasizes digital filmmaking, screenwriting, cinematic concepts, film editing, and motion capture techniques.
- Communication Design & Photographic Practice: Explores visual storytelling, graphic communication, digital photography, and commercial imagery.
- Transversal Design (Object and Interaction): Focuses on product design, physical interaction, human-computer interfaces, immersive virtual reality, and spatial design.
At the graduate level, the school offers the Master of Science in Game Design, Art and Technology (GDAT), taught in collaboration with the College of Computing and Data Science. The curriculum bridges technical programming with visual art, focusing on real-time rendering, metaverse asset workflows, and generative AI pipelines. Research degrees include Master of Arts and PhD programs in Art, Design and Media.
Technical Training and Emerging Workflows
Curriculum modules progress from core foundational studies to technical subjects like Lighting and Rendering Pipeline, Digital Compositing, and Advanced 3D Production. Creative tools integrated into the programs include Autodesk Maya, Maxon ZBrush, Foundry Nuke, SideFX Houdini, Unreal Engine, and the Adobe Suite.
In addition to conventional digital pipelines, the school integrates generative artificial intelligence directly into coursework through modules such as Explorations in AI-Generated Art and Art in the Age of the Creative Machine. Students learn node-based workflows with ComfyUI alongside Midjourney and Vidu, applying them to projects that extend beyond standard formats to large-scale panoramic displays.
Facilities and Practical Experience
The school operates out of an architecturally recognized 215,000-square-foot facility featuring an accessible 45-degree green roof. Interior infrastructure includes over 50 studios and laboratories:
- Audio and Sound Design: Surround Sound Precision Studio, Sound Stage Studio, and a dedicated Foley Studio for spatial audio mixing.
- Visual Effects and Post-Production: Specialized Colour Grading Studios and digital compositing suites.
- Animation and 3D Production: High-performance GPU workstations tailored for physics simulations, complex rendering, and real-time engine processing.
- Presentation Spaces: A 450-seat screening auditorium, two formal art galleries, and a fine arts library.
Undergraduate students complete a mandatory 10-week industry internship alongside a year-long Final Year Project. Capstone works span animated shorts, interactive virtual reality experiences, and functional game prototypes, which are showcased publicly at the annual ADM Show.
