About Multimedia University

Multimedia University (MMU) approaches creative production through a digital-first, technology-driven lens. Established in 1996 by Telekom Malaysia as the country's first private university, the institution developed alongside Malaysia's Multimedia Super Corridor initiative. Its creative programs emphasize computational fluency, technical research and development, and production workflows alongside artistic practice.

Creative technology education at MMU is centered primarily at the Cyberjaya campus within two specialized divisions: the Faculty of Creative Multimedia (FCM) and the Faculty of Cinematic Arts (FCA).

Creative Multimedia and Digital Production

The Faculty of Creative Multimedia focuses on digital media, animation, and emerging technologies, integrating academic foundations with hands-on technical studio work.

  • Animation: The Bachelor in Animation (Honours) covers complete 3D production pipelines, balancing character modeling, lighting, and rendering with narrative storytelling.
  • Visual Effects: The Bachelor in Visual Effects (Honours) prepares students for specialized pipeline roles, encompassing pre-production planning, matte painting, dynamic effects simulation, compositing, and on-set VFX execution.
  • Immersive Media Design: The Bachelor in Immersive Media Design (Honours) addresses spatial computing, virtual reality, and interactive environments. Coursework progresses from foundational visual programming, multimodal interaction design, and 3D creation in the first year to AR/VR design, interface modeling, digital prototyping, and game scripting in the second year. The final year centers on mixed-reality applications, experimental media projects, and an industry internship.

Cinematic Arts and Production Methodology

The Faculty of Cinematic Arts, developed in collaboration with the University of Southern California (USC) before consolidating at the Cyberjaya campus in 2021, operates on a comprehensive script-to-screen methodology.

Instruction follows an intensive "Block Teaching" model designed to emulate industry production cycles rather than conventional multi-course semesters. Students complete sequential, masterclass-style subjects guided by resident faculty and visiting industry professionals, producing narrative fiction, documentary projects, and interactive moving images from their first year onward.

Facilities and Industry Engagement

Creative production at the Cyberjaya campus is supported by dedicated technical facilities, including motion capture studios, a 180-degree green screen stage, Mac editing suites, audio production facilities, and digital fabrication spaces.

Student portfolio work is exhibited publicly through graduation events, including the MADUSA Advertising Design Showcase and the annual FCM Animation & Visual Effects Industry Preview, connecting graduating cohorts directly with production studios and regional creative industries.
