About MIT Institute of Design

The MIT Institute of Design (MITID) operates as a constituent college of MIT Art, Design and Technology University, based on a 125-acre campus at Rajbaug in Loni Kalbhor, Pune. Established in 2006, the institute delivers multidisciplinary design education combining creative practice, emerging technology, and management fundamentals.

Creative Pathways and Specializations

Undergraduate and postgraduate education is structured around four-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des) and two-year Master of Design (M.Des) degrees spanning several entertainment and digital media disciplines:

  • Animation Design: Spans classical 2D techniques and 3D animation, character design, visual storytelling, and storyboarding. Advanced coursework covers motion graphics, stop-motion animation, visual effects for film and games, and the integration of artificial intelligence and virtual reality into the animation pipeline.
  • Game Design: Combines game art and production methods, covering concept and environmental design, 2D and 3D asset creation, level design, game psychology, and foundational programming. Students can direct their final portfolios toward 2D or 3D development tracks.
  • Film and Video Design: Explores experimental filmmaking, narrative construction, visual scripting, and moving image aesthetics.
  • Immersive Media Design: Advanced postgraduate study focused on spatial computing, virtual and augmented reality environments, and interactive storytelling.

Studio Facilities and Practical Training

Instruction emphasizes hands-on studio work and project-driven learning. Facilities at the Rajbaug campus include dedicated computer labs supported by high-speed networks and industry-standard digital tools, complemented by physical fabrication spaces for clay sculpting, woodworking, metal cutting, and 3D prototyping.

Students undertake research-led studio briefs supported by an institutional training and placement cell that liaises with commercial animation and interactive media studios. An on-campus incubation and accelerator centre also assists students aiming to launch independent creative ventures.
