About Middlesex University

Middlesex University delivers career-focused degrees across animation, visual effects, games design, and virtual production within its Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries. Originating from roots dating to 1878, the institution's creative programs emphasize practical technical training and commercial production workflows.

Undergraduate and postgraduate tracks are structured around collaborative production and project-based problem solving. Foundational studies establish principles in drawing, conceptualization, and digital pipelines, while advanced modules incorporate motion capture, real-time rendering, and virtual set design. Students in games design engage with both analog and digital prototyping, while those studying 3D animation and visual effects develop hand-keyed motion, compositing, and environment art.

Production Facilities

Creative disciplines are centered in the purpose-built Grove building at the Hendon campus in North London, operating under the banner of MDX Studios:

  • Motion Capture Studio: A dedicated sound-proofed green-screen environment equipped with a 25-camera OptiTrack setup and Vanishing Point Viper.
  • Digital Media Workshops: More than 80 workstations outfitted with Wacom drawing tablets and Cintiq displays for 2D and 3D pipelines.
  • Immersive Technology Lab: Virtual and augmented reality hardware for spatial design, interactive testing, and real-time development.
  • Production Suites: Facilities for stop-motion animation, ADR and Foley audio recording, and DaVinci Resolve color grading.

Industry Collaboration

Curriculums incorporate live briefs from external creative clients, requiring students to pitch concepts and deliver assets against production schedules. Tutors and active practitioners mentor students through project cycles. Graduating cohorts present their final major projects and portfolio reels to industry guests, studio scouts, and the public during the annual North London Degree Show Festival.
