About Max the Mutt College of Animation, Art & Design
Max the Mutt College of Animation, Art & Design is a boutique career college in Toronto dedicated to visual storytelling, animation, and production design. Founded by industry artists, the college structures its training around the principle that solid representational fine arts skills must precede digital production.
Visual Arts Literacy and Classical Fundamentals
Instruction across all disciplines begins with intensive visual arts training. Students focus on life drawing, structural drawing, human and animal anatomy, perspective, and color theory before progressing to digital workflows. The curriculum treats software as an instrument rather than a shortcut, aiming to cultivate artists who understand form, motion, and design deeply enough to adapt across changing studio pipelines.
Learning takes place in cohorts capped at 15 students. Classes are led by working industry professionals who provide direct critique and individualized mentorship, simulating the collaborative atmosphere and accountability of an active production studio.
Diploma Pathways and Foundations
The college offers four-year diploma programs alongside a preparatory certificate:
- Animation Diploma: Covers classical 2D hand-drawn animation principles, 3D computer animation, character layout, storyboarding, and background painting. Coursework incorporates acting for animation to train students in conveying performance and emotion, culminating in a short film and demo reel.
- Concept Art Diploma: Designed around studio portfolio standards, this program trains students in character, creature, and environmental design, as well as prop visualization and digital matte painting for film and games. Instruction balances traditional drawing with 3D block-outs and digital rendering.
- Illustration & Storytelling for Sequential Arts Diploma: Focuses on comic arts, graphic novels, and children's book illustration. Students learn penciling, inking, scripting, and typography, alongside business fundamentals and digital publishing. Each graduate completes and self-publishes an original book project in print and digital formats.
- Foundations Certificate: A one-year preparatory program that mirrors first-year diploma drawing and design coursework, designed to help students assemble a competitive admissions portfolio.
Digital Tools and Delivery Options
Upper-level digital coursework centers on industry-standard production software, including Autodesk Maya for 3D modeling, rigging, and animation, Toon Boom Harmony and Storyboard Pro for 2D animation pipelines, and Adobe Photoshop for digital painting and concept design.
In-person instruction is conducted at the downtown Toronto campus. In addition, the college offers the Foundations Certificate and Concept Art Diploma through synchronous online delivery, featuring live interactive critique via video sessions and studio communication channels.
During their final year, students prepare professional portfolios, websites, and promotional materials. The program concludes with an annual industry showcase where graduating artists present their reels, concept work, and publications directly to studio recruiters.
