About Manchester Metropolitan University

Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) delivers its creative technology, animation, and visual effects education through the School of Digital Arts (SODA), an interdisciplinary facility opened in 2021. Located on the university's city-center campus, the school operates as a dedicated studio ecosystem where students from diverse digital disciplines collaborate on shared production pipelines.

Educational Approach

The curriculum follows a practice-led model designed to transition students from foundational artistic principles to industry-standard technical workflows. The school operates several formal industry partnerships that embed commercial pipelines into the syllabus:

  • Animation: Recognized as a Toon Boom Centre of Excellence and Blackmagic Design Education Partner, the BA (Hons) Animation program covers 2D, 3D, and stop-motion production.
  • Games Art: The BA and MA programs are official Unreal Academic Partners, with a curriculum focused on world-building and high-fidelity asset production.
  • VFX: The BSc (Hons) Computer Animation and Visual Effects program, delivered alongside the Department of Computing and Mathematics, is a Houdini Certified degree program.

Facilities

The SODA building is designed to emulate professional production environments. Key infrastructure includes:

  • Production Spaces: Industry-specification stop-motion bays with Dragonframe, motion capture studios, and green screen soundstages.
  • Technical Labs: Dedicated facilities for virtual production, AR/VR, and computer labs featuring 70 Wacom Cintiq displays.
  • Collaborative Areas: Informal "Village Greens" integrated throughout the facility to foster cross-disciplinary interaction between animators, game artists, and filmmakers.

Industry Alignment

Curriculum development is informed by an Industry Advisory Group co-chaired by director Danny Boyle and producer Nicola Shindler, ensuring technical training addresses contemporary skill gaps in the regional digital sector. The building itself functions as a public exhibition space, utilizing a four-story LED light wall to broadcast student digital artwork to the city.
