About London Film School

Founded in 1956 as the London School of Film Technique, the London Film School operates as an independent postgraduate conservatory in central London. Rather than following a conventional lecture-based academic framework, the institution is structured around an intensive production studio model, delivering more than 180 student films each year.

The school focuses on physical live-action storytelling, script development, and screen business rather than computer animation, game development, or digital visual effects. Degree programs are delivered in London and validated through academic partnerships with the University of Warwick and the University of Exeter.

Practical Training and Production Units

Practical collaboration is central to the curriculum, most notably within the flagship MA Filmmaking program. Students work in small production units—typically six peers—and cycle systematically through core crew responsibilities:

  • Directing: Guiding actors, staging narrative scenes, and overseeing visual interpretation.
  • Cinematography: Shooting on traditional 16mm celluloid stock before progressing to modern digital cinema cameras.
  • Producing: Handling production logistics, scheduling, budgeting, and team management.
  • Screenwriting: Developing original treatments, dramatic structures, and shooting scripts.
  • Production Design and Sound: Shaping physical sets, recording location audio, and managing post-production sound workflows.

Working across peer projects before directing a final graduation film ensures that students experience every phase of the filmmaking pipeline.

Screenwriting, Producing, and Industry Business

Beyond general filmmaking, LFS provides specialized master's tracks designed for writers, producers, and creative executives. Specialized curricula in Screenwriting, Film Producing, Film Marketing, and International Film Business cover financing structures, intellectual property rights, distribution models, and script analysis. Active industry practitioners lead script clinics, seminars, and masterclasses throughout the academic year.

Facilities Across Covent Garden

The school maintains two teaching hubs in London's Covent Garden neighborhood:

  • Parker Street Campus: Located above The Garden Cinema at 39–41 Parker Street, this facility houses design studios, administrative hubs, technical teaching spaces, and post-production edit suites.
  • Shelton Street Campus: Based at 24 Shelton Street in a converted brewery building, this site provides dedicated shooting stages, camera prep areas, and traditional screening rooms.
