About Limerick School of Art and Design

The Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD) is a constituent art and design college within the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS). Tracing its origins to the School of Ornamental Art founded in 1852, the institution combines a long heritage in traditional fine arts with focused technical training in visual effects, game art, and animation.

While classical art and foundational design pathways are based in Limerick City across the historic Clare Street and George's Quay facilities, the college concentrates its digital entertainment technology degrees at the Clonmel Digital Campus in County Tipperary. This campus functions as a dedicated production hub for the Department of Digital Arts & Media, providing an environment organized around collaborative studio workflows.

Digital Media and Production Pathways

LSAD offers specialized undergraduate degrees designed to prepare students for commercial production pipelines:

  • BSc (Hons) in Game Art and Design: A four-year Level 8 program balancing visual development with technical implementation. The curriculum progresses from creative coding, visual design, and 3D modeling in the first year to game engine programming, character rigging, and real-time visual effects. Advanced years introduce XR development, spatial computing, and level design, culminating in a 30-credit major games project or studio internship.
  • BSc (Hons) in Digital Animation Production: Taught at the Clonmel campus, recognized as a Toon Boom Centre of Excellence. The program integrates 2D and 3D pipelines, covering drawing principles, visual storytelling, 2D puppet rigging, compositing, and creature animation. It also incorporates transversal skills modules such as team psychology and production culture to prepare students for studio team dynamics.
  • BSc (Hons) in Visual Effects for Film, TV, and Animation: Developed with contributions from studio veterans, this degree focuses on industry skills shortages in matchmoving, look development, digital matte painting, procedural simulation, and technical direction.
  • BA (Hons) Pathways via Art and Design (Common Entry): Students entering traditional design disciplines, including Animation and Motion Design, complete a shared first-year foundation covering 2D studies, 3D studies, digital media, and contextual studies before choosing a major specialization.

Agile Studio Methodology and Toolsets

A notable element of the curriculum is the agile production framework utilized in practical studio modules. In self-directed game art projects, assessment centers on the execution of agile production plans, iterative milestones, and portfolio presentation rather than penalizing creative risk, allowing students to experiment with technical workflows and rapid prototyping.

Instruction focuses on industry-standard production software across disciplines, including Toon Boom Harmony for digital 2D animation, Autodesk Maya and 3ds Max for 3D modeling and rigging, SideFX Houdini for procedural visual effects and simulations, Foundry Nuke for node-based compositing, Foundry Mari for texture painting, and Pixologic ZBrush for digital sculpting.

Professional Practice and Industry Engagement

Practical experience is supported by practical industry internships and "Film CEL," the college's internal production unit providing hands-on live project opportunities. Final-year students showcase their work at the annual LSAD Graduate Show, traditionally hosted in the Church Gallery at the Clare Street campus. Through TUS's involvement in the Regional University Network – European University (RUN-EU) alliance, students also have access to European study exchanges and collaborative short advanced programs with partner institutions across Europe.
