About LASALLE College of the Arts

Established in 1984, LASALLE College of the Arts is a publicly funded arts institution in Singapore and an autonomous constituent college of the University of the Arts Singapore (UAS). Training in screen-based arts is centered within the Puttnam School of Film & Animation, which delivers diploma and degree pathways designed to bridge creative narrative design and modern production pipelines.

Animation and Screen Production

The Puttnam School offers academic tracks including the BA (Hons) Animation Art and foundational diplomas in Animation and Broadcast Media. The curriculum emphasizes a practice-led approach where animation students collaborate across disciplines with peers in music, acting, and design, reflecting professional studio dynamics.

The three-year BA (Hons) Animation Art builds progressively through core production disciplines:

  • First Year: Covers foundational environment modeling, life drawing, core animation principles, and cinematic analysis spanning World and Asian cinema traditions.
  • Second Year: Emphasizes advanced character animation, specialized technical techniques, and narrative interpretation of film form.
  • Third Year: Culminates in a 60-credit animated Graduation Project short film alongside an academic dissertation.

The program explicitly engages with emerging technology, incorporating critical evaluation of generative artificial intelligence tools into creative workflows.

Professional Practice and Facilities

Preparation for industry practice is anchored by the UAS Common Curriculum. Undergraduates complete a mandatory 400-hour (ten-week) Industry-Based Learning practicum, a 36-hour cross-disciplinary collaborative module titled IN-depth, and focused career skills training.

Teaching and production take place across two physical sites in Singapore:

  • McNally Campus: The primary creative hub in the Rochor district, housing exhibition galleries, computer laboratories, and the Media Lab, which supports physical computing, digital fabrication, and open-source prototyping.
  • Winstedt Campus: A dedicated workshop facility featuring specialized media arts studios and technical spaces for intensive hands-on development and fabrication.
