About La Salle Campus Barcelona - Universitat Ramon Llull

La Salle Campus Barcelona, a founding member of Universitat Ramon Llull, bridges engineering and artistic creativity within Catalonia's higher education landscape. The institution embeds creative training directly into technological and production contexts, mirroring studio pipelines where technical directors, digital artists, and producers collaborate across disciplines.

The four-year Bachelor in Animation and VFX is structured around a progressive, project-based production pipeline:

  • Pre-Production: Covers foundational storytelling, concept art, anatomy, cinematography, digital painting, and 2D animation principles.
  • 3D Production: Focuses on modeling, texturing, rigging, look development, and character animation, incorporating hard-surface and organic sculpting alongside procedural workflows and real-time engine blueprints.
  • Post-Production: Centers on visual effects simulations, digital compositing, rigid-body and particle dynamics, and virtual production pipelines.

Curricula across the creative disciplines integrate procedural logic and artificial intelligence as creative and exploratory tools. The university trains students to maintain artistic authorship while working within node-based software environments, including Houdini, Maya, and Nuke, holding official recognition as an Autodesk Certified center, a Certified Nuke Training Centre, and a Houdini Certified School. Courses also incorporate ZBrush for organic sculpting, Substance 3D Painter for texturing, and Unreal Engine for real-time interactivity.

Practical training takes place within dedicated production environments, notably the Interactive Arts & Science Laboratory (IASlab). This multi-space facility includes:

  • VFX Animation Studio: Equipped with dedicated ASUS ProArt workstations, Cintiq drawing tablets, and a 250-node render farm for high-fidelity asset rendering and shading.
  • Virtual Set: Features a chroma key stage with real-time camera tracking for motion capture, live VFX integration, and virtual production workflows.
  • Immersive Room: Houses a 360-degree projection environment with spatialized audio for VR and interactive media testing.
  • Acoustic Chambers: Anechoic and reverberation rooms designed for sound design and audiovisual post-production.

For project acceleration, the campus operates the BrooderLab incubator, providing mentorship and support to help take student creations into international film and media festivals. Further advanced studies include the Master of Science in Digital Arts and Creative Technologies, which explores creative coding, sensor integration, and virtual environments.
