About Kyoto University of the Arts
Kyoto University of the Arts is a private arts institution located in Kyoto, combining traditional creative foundations with digital production tailored to Japan's commercial creative industries. The university organizes its entertainment and digital arts curricula across specialized departments, including Character Design, Game Creation, Manga, Illustration, and Film Production.
Curriculum and Technical Progression
Within the Character Design and Game Creation courses, the undergraduate curriculum follows a structured multi-year progression from analog fundamentals to complete digital pipelines:
- First Year: Students focus on anatomy, drafting, foundational 2D illustration, introductory 3D modeling, and 2D skeletal rigging using Live2D.
- Second Year: Training advances to digital workflows centered on CLIP STUDIO PAINT, ZBrush, and Adobe Creative Cloud, covering character concept design, intermediate 3D graphics, and game UI/UX.
- Third Year: Coursework transitions to collaborative, industry-modeled group projects emphasizing interactive game mechanics, narrative design, and cross-disciplinary problem-solving.
- Fourth Year: Students complete self-directed graduation projects, assembling professional portfolios that demonstrate advanced motion graphics, complex 3D asset generation, and specialized technical execution.
Rather than centering instruction exclusively on Western visual effects workflows, the curriculum emphasizes tools prevalent in domestic game production, mobile entertainment, and character illustration. Blender is taught as the primary 3D modeling package alongside ZBrush for sculpting, while Live2D provides specialized training for real-time 2D animation.
Physical Fabrication and Facilities
Cross-disciplinary physical making is centered at the Ultra Factory, a large-scale fabrication lab directed by artist Kenji Yanobe. The facility houses specialized technical workshops, including the S21 studio for metal fabrication and resin molding, the S32 studio for screen printing, and the S41 digital fabrication studio equipped with CNC milling machines and 3D printers. Access requires completion of mandatory technical training and safety certification courses. Through the Ultra Projects program, students also assist visiting professional artists and designers on commercial commissions and major exhibitions.
Distance Learning and Online Degrees
The university also operates an extensive Correspondence Education division offering fully remote Bachelor of Arts degrees in Illustration as well as Film and Image-making. The online Illustration degree features video curriculum modules created in partnership with the digital creator platform Pixiv, pairing flexible asynchronous coursework with individualized feedback from practicing professional illustrators.
